1 Chicago officer killed, 1 wounded in traffic stop shooting

A 29-year-old female police officer in Chicago was killed and another officer was seriously wounded in an exchange of gunfire during a traffic stop, officials said Sunday, the city’s mayor later citing the shooting as a reason for Chicagoans to work together to stem violence.

The officer killed Saturday night was identified as Ella French, according to a post on the Chicago Police Department’s Facebook page Sunday evening. French’s death was the first fatal shooting of a Chicago officer in the line of duty since 2018 and the first female officer fatally shot on the job in 33 years.

“We will never forget the true bravery she exemplified as she laid her life down to protect others,” the department said of French on Facebook, adding that fellow officers will “grieve the loss of this hero.” The department also requested support for French’s “wounded partner, who is in the hospital fighting for his life.”

At a Sunday news conference, Mayor Lori Lightfoot urged Chicagoans to end the acrimony between ardent police proponents who say officers are hampered by overly burdensome rules and staunch critics who say officers act with impunity.

“Stop. Just stop,” she said. “This constant strife is not what we need in this moment.”

2 men shot Friday afternoon in Severn, police say

Two men were shot Friday afternoon in Severn, Anne Arundel County police said.

As police continue searching for suspects, 11 News spoke to witnesses who shared cellphone video recorded seconds after the shooting. It was a violent encounter around 3:45 p.m. on Deerfield Road that ended with gunfire.

“He was like pointing it at a downward area, and he shot like five times,” witness Raymond Somerville said. “He was limping on one leg, and he was like, ‘Ah, I’m shot. I’m shot. Somebody call the police. Somebody call the police.”

Somerville was outside with his young son trying to help the victim, who he said had a gun and began firing it.

“Me and my son were, like, right there and people were coming across the street. I was like, ‘Oh. I’m calling the police.’ And he was like pow, pow, pow. So, my son just ran,” Somerville said.

Witnesses said the people who shot at the victim chased after another man.

“I seen him running around the building, and he just ran straight through the woods toward the store,” Somerville said.

The crime scene then poured out into the parking lot. A victim ran for safety outside of a food mart where witnesses said he was shot.

“I just heard a lot of people screaming and hollering, so I didn’t know what was going on. I just drove up here. Now, I see,” witness Alby Carter said.

Anne Arundel County police found a second victim shot in front of the Orchard Food Market on Reece Road, where people who live nearby said the two men shot work outside of the store.
